This season has a few wild things in store for us. Working in retail and being a fan of runway shows I’ve seen some things that I disagree with. For example.. Floral is out this season. What? Shut up. Floral never goes out of style.. even if it is super cold out. Anyway, a huge thing that also never goes out of style is layering. Now it hasn’t been that big a deal in the past, but lately the layers have been getting sexier, thicker, and more serious. It’s one of my favorites. I know it’s a problem for most big girls because they don’t dig looking bigger - who would? But if done right, you won’t look bigger. I promise. The key is to shop for things that are not:
- cropped.
- too long for your height.
- too thick.
For a bigger, shorter girl I suggest Forever 21 plus. They’ve literally got the cutest sweaters and throws for super reasonable prices. H&M has those ponchos that are cute too, and look good on all sizes. Find things that hit you at about your hips or an inch lower and a funky belt to sinch it at the waste. For taller, thinner girls you can do cropped, uncropped, or long ethereal sweaters. These are also pieces you can find at Forever 21, H&M, Urban Outfitters and my personal favorite - Buffalo Exchange. If you’ve never shopped at Buffalo Exchange you need to get slapped. It’s honestly a treasure box and way better than Andy’s Cheep-E’s. I’ll talk more to you guys about thrift stores in a later post though. Right now, we’re talking layers.
Long sleeve sweaters are fun, but you might get way too warm, luckily panchos and ruana wraps are in style. So you can pair them with whatever you feel like - a tank, short sleeve blouse, long sleeve blouse, quarter sleeve blouse, etc. A great sweater goes a long way. To make your outfit POP you want to look for something with a great funky pattern. Navajo is big, but I’m not a fan. If you want to stray away from the back, stick to more abstract patterns, polka dots, shapes, stripes, etc. NO NAVAJO. (No offense to native americans <3)
Infinity scarves, neck warmers, and regular scarves are also staples you NEED in your closet. If you havent bought any, I will personally buy you one. Well, not really. BUT THEY’RE SO IMPORTANT! You can find these little heffers everywhere. Amazon, UO, F21, H&M, Buffalo, and even little NYC outdoor stands for about $5 a piece. Every girl needs at least two scarves. A bright color, and a neutral. So, go. Do it. NOW.
Your coat is next.
So there’s this image floating around tumblr with a lovely lady on it wearing an 80s diamond print black puffy coat that says “Old coats dressed in a modern way” or some crazy shit. It’s true. Trench coats are huge in London right now. They’re pretty much uniform out there. Everyone has one, no matter the length or color, they’re all sporting a trench. Another thing that’s fun and more me is the Canvas Parka’s. These coats are so versatile and can be dressed up, and down, and are a bit thin so you can layer it up underneath. For a fun vintage look I suggest the classics:
- Jean Jacket
- Leather Jacket
- Puffy Jacket
Try to steer away from North Face coats and ski coats because as warm as they are, they’re one note wonders and fail miserably at making you look good. Besides, if you’re bundled up properly, anything else should work just fine at keeping you warm during this season.
Last, is your hat. You’ve gotta keep your head warm regardless of how great your hair looks. Slouchy hats, berets, fedora’s and top hats, ear muffs, etc. They’re all super funky, look good with layers, and won’t freeze your head off to the point of discomfort.
All these tips apply to males too. Your outfit is strictly up to you this season. I know some people like bumming it out and others like sparking it up to slowly unravel their outfit. Nonetheless, every guy and gal can shop at these locations for moderate prices and make themselves look good for the winter. Remember, layer it up with a scarf, hat, sweater, and fun coat for an awesome winter look!
